ATU Account and Email

This is my first time accessing my ATU account, what are the steps needed:

You will require a mobile device, such as a phone or tablet, so you can set up multifactor authentication (MFA) for your account.

This mobile device must have connectivity to receive texts or alerts via the Microsoft Authenticator app, so a data plan may be required.

If it is your first time signing in and setting up your ATU Account, you will need the following:

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an extra layer of security for your ATU @atu.ie Microsoft 365 account. It verifies your identity using an additional factor (something you have in your possession, such as your mobile phone) and prevents others from accessing your account, even if they know your password. All ATU students are required to register their account for MFA.

If it is your first time signing in and setting up your ATU Account, then please go to the first FAQ topic at the top of this page “This is my first time accessing my ATU account, what are the steps needed:”

Note: You can also use a private browsing method, such as Google Chrome Incognito. Keep in mind, if you use a private browsing method, you will need to use this each time you want to log in. Private browsing does not store logins.

After you have successfully signed in, you may also be prompted with a  screen that says, ‘More information required’.  If so, press the Next button and carefully follow the steps on-screen to set up multifactor authentication on your ATU email account.  Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. Agree to the terms.

If you have been using a laptop/desktop computer for the previous steps, on your browser, click until you see the QR code on screen. Scan QR code with your mobile device. The ATU account should now be added to the authenticator. If you have been using a mobile device for the previous steps, rather than scan a QR code, you will be met with a screen that allows you to pair your account with Microsoft Authenticator. You must press the link to pair your account to your device – please do not click Next past this step, or it will not pair. If you have clicked Next by mistake, press the back button on your browser and start again.

After your account is paired with Microsoft Authenticator, a push notification will be sent to your mobile device. Approve the request. Click Next and Done on the browser you were using to log in. Log in with your new ATU account.

I forgot my ATU account password, how do I reset it?

Your ATU account password can be reset by using the ATU Password Manager website: https://password.atu.ie/

I can’t reset my password using the ATU Password Manager website. I am getting this error when I try: “You can't reset your own password because you haven't registered for password reset.” How can I reset my password?

This error appears if you do not have multifactor authentication (MFA) set up on your mobile device when trying to reset your password. If you are a newly registering student, you must log into your ATU email account for the first time with the temporary password that was sent to your personal email address. On your first ATU account login, you will be required to set up multifactor authentication and reset your password. Once your password has been set and your MFA is set up, you may change your password using the ATU Password Manager website:  https://password.atu.ie/

No longer receiving multifactor authentication (MFA) texts/requests to Microsoft Authenticator app on mobile device:

Solution 1:

Please check all items below:

  1. Your mobile device must be able to receive texts or notifications, which may require a phone plan/data plan/Wi-Fi connectivity. Without connectivity, the device will not receive MFA requests.
  2. Ensure that your mobile device has all notifications turned on.
  3. Ensure that your mobile device is not restricting notifications from the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  4. Ensure your device is not in any sort of ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, this will prevent the device from receiving alerts/texts.
  5. Restarting your mobile device may resolve the issue.

Solution 2:

If any of the items below are true for you, you may require support to reset the multifactor authentication (MFA) settings on your ATU account, so you can set it up again:

  1. You have changed your mobile phone number.
  2. You have switched to a new MFA device and you are no longer using the old one.
  3. You have uninstalled/reinstalled the Microsoft Authenticator app from the device.
  4. You have removed/tried to re-add your ATU account to the Microsoft Authenticator app.
  5. You have reset the device back to factory default settings, restored a backup, or wiped/reinstalled the operating system on the phone.

Please note,  a  MFA reset requests will need to be conducted over the phone for security reasons.
Once your MFA has been reset, you will need to set it back up again like you did the first time.
