The research was only performed on business professionals working in this sectors, by analysing different motivational factors and leadership styles. After a series of in-depth interviews and questionnaire analysis with managers and employees, it has become clear to the author that specific leadership styles and economic factors have an impact on the motivational levels of employees.
The author established the following in his research:
- There are specific motivational factors that are more relevant in a economic downturn. These include financial incentives, unemployment, work life balance, job security, recognition and responsibility.
- The Laissex-Faire style, Authoritative style, Democratic or Participative style and the Affiliative style are responsible for contributing to a high motivational level in the ICT sector in the current economic downturn.
- That these specific leadership styles are more dominant in an economic downturn.
- Comparing the key motivational factors in the current economic climate to the key leadership styles and their traits, the researcher discovered that these styles facilitate the need for these factors.
- Leaders that understand the impact of more than one style and are able to manage between four or more styles, especially Laissez-Faire, Authoritative, Democratic or Participative and Affiliative are in the best position to succeed with their employees and drive high motivation levels. |
